Wakeboarding is one of 12 sports available to play in Wii Sports Resort. It can be played by up to four players, each taking turns.
Overview[]
Unlike most sports in the game, this game is played holding the Wii Remote sideways. The main gameplay is centered around the player's Mii, who rides a wakeboard while being towed by a rope behind the boat. The boat is operated by Miis saved on the player's console (if there aren't any available, the Miis are randomly generated). There is a 2-minute time limit.
The objective is to jump off the distortion in the water (a "wake", hence the name of the sport) caused by the boat, and land flat to earn points. Extra points can be obtained by shaking the Wii Remote once the Mii jumps off the wake to perform a trick. The amount of points gained from jumps and tricks depends on the height, timing, angle, and succession. The boat will also speed up every time you stick the landing, and slow down if you miss.
On higher difficulties, there are some obstacles along the course. These can cause the player's Mii to lose their grip on the rope, either by the rope getting caught or by running into the object. If so, they'll soon respawn shortly before they fell, with the boat's speed and your jumping streak reset.
Difficulty levels[]
There are three difficulty levels:
- Beginner - There are no obstacles to worry about. This course takes place at daytime.
- Intermediate - There are a few obstacles on the route, such as the Barnacle Arch and posts. Takes place at daytime.
- Expert - The route is practically one big obstacle course, as there are many obstacles (including posts). Takes place in the evening.
Free Cruising[]
Only available in single-player, Free Cruising is an extra mode accessed by pressing (-) on the start screen. Here, you'll have 5 minutes to wakeboard freely as the boat cruises around the entire island. No points can be scored in this mode, though the boat will still speed up upon successful jumps and slow down for misses. Getting these speed boosts is essential to obtaining "The Long Way Home" stamp.
Stamps[]
Name | Description |
---|---|
Huge Air (100-Point Jump) | Score 100 points on a single jump! Build up your speed and pull off some massive air. |
Bag of Tricks (Seven Jumps) | Land seven or more different kinds of jumps on a single run. Try changing the speed and length of your approach to the wake to pull off different jumps. |
Smooth Landing (Surf Skimmer) | Land 10 jumps in a row. Even if you pull off an amazing jump, it won't mean anything if you don't land it right. Keep your board flat when landing. |
Master Carver (Clear Run) | Score 1,000 points or more on the Expert Level without hitting any obstacles. |
The Long Way Home (Circumnavigator) | Land 50 jumps and wakeboard all the way around Wuhu Island in Free-Cruising mode. You have to complete a course afterwards to get the stamp. |
Trivia[]
- Wakeboarding is one of the three sports in Wii Sports Resort (the other two being Golf and Archery) with only one sub-game mode.
- The Mii shown in the tutorial pictures is Jen, a preview Mii.
- If the player fails to land flat eight times in a row, the game will stop, and it will tell you to land flat.
- The same thing can happen if the player fails to do a trick eight times in a row.
- The concept of this sport was originally going to centered around a movie stunt of sorts.
- Adding on to this, there is an unused graphic that shows Will holding a camera on the Wakeboarding boat. This could suggest that Wakeboarding was originally meant as a movie stunt, rather than just doing it for fun. For some reason, the Miis near the cameraman are T-posing.
- Additionally, there art two unused Wakeboarding props those being the same camera Will is holding and a clapperboard with "Production" on it.
- The Clapper also has 4 unused animations associated with it.
- Adding on to this, there is an unused graphic that shows Will holding a camera on the Wakeboarding boat. This could suggest that Wakeboarding was originally meant as a movie stunt, rather than just doing it for fun. For some reason, the Miis near the cameraman are T-posing.
- The route of the motorboat is stored in Stage/JskScene/WkbWakeboard.carc contains a file called WS2_wkb_island.pmp. It contains the routes wakeboard_4, wakeboard_5 and wakeboard_8, which are unused in the final game. These routes can be seen here.
- Like Power Cruising and Island Flyover (Air Sports), this sport has a debug menu below:
