Taking a three-pointer in Pick-up Game.

Basketball is one of the twelve available sports to play in Wii Sports Resort, as well as one of the eight in Nintendo Switch Sports. In Wii Sports Resort, there are two variations of the game: 3-Point Contest, and 3-On-3 Game (Pickup Game), whereas in Nintendo Switch Sports, there are four variants: Two-on-Two, Three-Point Challenge, Three-Point Contest and Five-Streak Battle.

3-Point Contest[]

Lucía about to play 3-Point Contest.

The objective of the 3-Point Contest is to shoot as many 3-point shots into the basket in one minute. There are 5 racks with 5 balls each, making a total of up to 25 balls. At the end of each rack, there is a striped ball which is worth two points. Getting all points gives the player a stamp. If this happens, the remaining time gives bonus points.

3-On-3 Game (Pickup Game)[]

Miyu, with her teammates Akira and Haru, about to play against Hiroshi, with his teammates Ryan and Vincenzo in 3-on-3 Game.

The Pick-Up Game is a 3-on-3 game where the player must score more baskets than the opposing team. Movement is controlled automatically, while the passing is done with the A button and D-Pad, and the dribbling and shooting are handled with motion controls, as well as the player's opponent trying to steal possession of the ball. When shooting, the opponent can jump to try to block the player's shot.

Your first opponent is Miguel, whose teammates are Anna and Takashi, while the Champion is Tommy and his teammates are Eva and Tyrone. Beating the Champion will grant you a stamp, called "Hoop Hero".

In the Champion match[]

  • You automatically play at night in the match.
  • You earn the Hoop Hero stamp after beating the champion team (when the captain is Tommy, not Eva or Tyrone).
  • After you win the Hoop Hero stamp, you can jump higher and run faster like them.

Left- or Right-Handed[]

Left-Handed (as team captain):

Miguel, Andy, Megan, Kentaro, Elisa, Hiromi, Gwen, Miyu, Alisha, Chika, Matt, Lucía, Vincenzo, Hiroshi, Ryan, Rainer, Marco, Marisa, Kathrin, Keiko, Giovanna, Michael, Naomi, Shinnosuke, Sarah, Shouta, Stéphanie, Ursula, Gabriele, Shinta, Ian, Oscar, Emma, Jessie, Hayley, Abby, Shohei, Pierre, Misaki, Haru, James

Right-Handed (as team captain):

Anna, Takashi, Nick, Cole, Eddy, Jackie, Martin, Víctor, Mia, Gabi, Emily, Yoko, Julie, Steph, Fumiko, Mike, Holly, Daisuke, George, Fritz, Asami, Sandra, Tomoko, Greg, Sakura, Rin, Tatsuaki, Jake, Chris, Luca, Hiromasa, Eduardo, Ai, Rachel, Siobhán, Saburo, Maria, Takumi, Sota, Ren, Helen, Barbara, Alex, Nelly, Akira, Silke, Patrick, David, Midori, Yoshi, Steve, Theo, Pablo, Susana, Abe, Ashley, Tyrone, Eva, Tommy

How to Beat Tommy (the Champion) at Pickup Game[]

  • To block their shots, simply spam tap the + button so you see when they jump, and then simply unpause the game and jump directly.
  • To score, wait before you pass. If your team member walks to the back and then walks forward, pass to him/her and shoot directly. You can wait for a little too since your opponent is too far away to block it.
  • If you are winning in the last 20 seconds of the game, try to run the clock by passing the ball between open teammates. Usually, you would do it to the same two teammates. This strategy works for any team you face, but it is generally used on the harder teams.

Finding Skill Level in Pickup Game[]

Here is the formula for finding skill level in Basketball Pickup Game:

Note: this only works if the player wins.

x = the player's score, y = the opponent's score, and z = the player's final skill's change,

z = 10x - 9y

An example would be this: if the player won 11-4, z = 10 * 11 - 9 * 4 = 74, so they would gain 74 skill points.

If the player ties, the number of skill points they gain is, however, many points they tie by. E.g. if the game was 12-12, they would gain 12 skill points.

The maximum number of points the player can win is 200 points, which can happen if they score at least 20 points more than their opponent's team (hence, x - y >= 20). The maximum number of points the player can lose is also 200 points, which can happen if their opponent scores 23 points more than their team (hence, y - x >= 23 or equivalently, x - y <=-23).

If the ratio of the player's opponent's score to their score is 10:9, then they will not gain any points.

Inputs[]

  • In a 3 on 3 pickup game in Basketball, hold 2 before entering a game to have the game played at night time.

Tips[]

  • The player can achieve 3-pointers by making a basket from the darker brown area on the outside of the court (this doesn't include the semi-circular zone in the center). They can also perform a slam dunk by readying for a shot when they're almost directly underneath the basket, in the central blue area (this earns the player two points). Shooting from anywhere else can earn the player two points.
  • A good trick to making a basket is to use little movement on the Wii Remote. That way, the Wii Remote won't pick up any motions to the left or right.
  • It's possible to throw the ball without jumping.

Nintendo Switch Sports[]

Basketball was added to Nintendo Switch Sports as a playable sport on July 9th 2024.

Easter egg[]

In the 1.5.0 update, if you hold the L and ZL or R and ZR buttons on your Joycons while choosing a CPU strength in Match Settings, Eva and Tyrone will appear as your opponents in Two-on-Two. Their titles are "Legend." You'll be partnered up with a Sportsmate named Lucía, whose title is "Staffer".

Trivia[]

  • Males wear black pants with shoes that correspond to their favorite color and black accents, and females wear shorts that correspond to their favorite color and shoes with their favorite color and white accents.
    • Male Miis' black pants also have a tint corresponding with their favorite color (i.e. Tommy's pants have a slight pink tint).
  • If both players scored at least twenty points (one by one), the announcer will say: "What a game!"
  • Starting with Mia and ending with Fumiko, all the team captains are female.
  • Starting with Michael and ending with Sarah, the teams are: the captain is one gender, and the teammates are of the other gender.
  • Except for Miguel's team and Tommy's team, the team captain is always the second-best member of each team.
  • Basketball and Baseball (Wii Sports Club) are the only sports in the series where both the Beginner and Champion are in Beginner Difficulty in Wii Party and Wii Party U.
  • The teams will always have the person below and above the captain in skill as the two other members. Since this is impossible for Miguel and Tommy because they are at the ends, they have the two people above/below in skill.
    • Because of this, Takashi and Tyrone are the only basketball players to be featured on more than three teams, and Miguel and Tommy are the only basketball players to be featured on less than three teams.
  • Eva has the same team as Tommy, the Champion. Also, Anna has the same team as Miguel, the Beginner.
  • If the player has only made one or two Miis, they will be partnered with one or two randomly generated Miis.
  • Unlike other sports, it is possible to gain skill points from a tie and therefore skip an opponent. However, this technique does not work on Tommy's team, since the game's mechanics require the player to beat him before moving on to a randomly selected opponent.
  • Every CPU Mii's hand dominance in this sport is identical to what it is in Table Tennis, provided they are the captain of their team.
    • Additionally, any CPU teammate's hand dominance is identical to that of the team captain in any one game.

Example: Víctor is right-handed when he is the team captain; therefore, his teammates, Hiromi and Mia, play right-handed with him. However, when Hiromi is the captain, she is left-handed; therefore, her teammates, Víctor and Martin, play left-handed with her.
